Well it’s out, I’ve only just got around to listening to it and it’s…different. Anyway, some info on the cause and why Bjork and Yorke got together for this number.
The single was composed specifically to encourage active support for the Náttúra campaign, which aims at collating and providing sustainable and eco-friendly options suitable for Iceland, and generating alternative ways to utilize it’s natural resources. People will be able to submit their ideas on the website for sustainable green workplaces for Icelanders.
According to Björk, “It is now more important than ever before to emphasize a respect for nature…I believe that profits, technological advances and working together with nature can all go hand in hand. None need to be sacrificed at the expense of the others.”
The song itself is ok, I know Thom Yorke loves a good cause, but he is literally only on this in name. All he provides is some anonymous ‘ooohhhing’ and ‘ahhhhing’ which could, quite frankly, be anyone.
But moving on from the lack of Thom, the song itself is quite nice, I like the nice tribal drums. But, as with most of Volta, Bjork seems a little less fluent, lyrically at least, and resorts to some random vocal trills to fill time a little too often.
So, unfortunately, this makes two disappointingly unepic collaborations between two artists who should make mind warpingly good music when they meet.
It’s a worthy cause though. So worthy that I shan’t dismantle the song further and I won’t even post the track for you to sample!
